It seems to me how tremendously easy it is to forget that our time on this earth is limited. When Jesus speaks to Peter that Peter has set his mind on earthly things when he should instead have fixed his mind on divine things, it serves as a reminder to all of us that life and death are ok. Jesus had just told his disciples that he was going to die, but their minds like Drew’s mother wasn’t ready. They had come to love Jesus and be loved, and that can make it hard to face a life of following Jesus, one that includes the cross.
